This painting was commissioned by a lady who'd had a very tumultuous childhood. She wanted a painting that symbolized hope. In the shadows of this painting is an empty cocoon indicating that the trappings of the past are gone. The butterfly has long been a symbol of new life and in this case is a picture of the lady now, being able to have a future that is free and beautiful.
